Remote Sensing

Meet Yi Qi

June 2023

Special guest: Yi Qi, Ph.D., Associate Professor (Teaching) of Spatial

Meet, Yi Qi, an associate professor of spatial sciences with the Spatial Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California. Prior to joining the Spatial Sciences Institute in August 2022, Dr. Qi was an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. From 2014 to 2018, he was a senior spatial scientist with Brown University.

In this presentation, Professor Qi discusses remote sensing, which NASA defines as the science of obtaining information about objects from a distance. This discussion includes the modern scope of remote sensing, which involves managing our land digitally and smartly. Professor Qi goes on to discuss the new applications of remote sensing, which include our ability to acquire very high resolution images from drones or airborne sensors that we can use to create 3D models.

Professor Qi also presents two case studies: agriculture; and urban trees. For the agriculture case study, the challenge was how to optimize agricultural production and sustainability. The approach used was multi-scale, multi-sensor tracking. For the urban trees case study data (including the USDA Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP); machine learning (including Google Earth Engine and cloud computing); and product (including tree canopy maps) were used.

Professor Qi’s research integrates remote sensing, geographic information systems and spatial data science in ecological monitoring, environmental studies and natural resource management. He looks forward to helping students who are currently working in GIST and those who are new to the field.
